You've heard it before: "If at first you don't succeed, try again."
Sometimes you may feel like that's just a saying, but it is absolutely
not. The 16 incredible stories below show how even horrible tragedies
and setbacks can help fuel a drive for success.
From Oprah Winfrey's scarred childhood to Bill Gates'
failed business ventures, these people have been through the grinder,
and came out even better than before. Their stories stress one of the
most important lessons of all: Never ever give up. Scroll through the list for some serious inspiration.
Bill Gates' first business failed.
Yes, the richest person in the whole world couldn't make any money at
first. Gates' first company, Traf-O-Data (a device which could read
traffic tapes and process the data), failed miserably. When Gates and
his partner, Paul Allen, tried to sell it, the product wouldn't even
work. Gates and Allen didn't let that stop them from trying again
though. Here's how Allen explained how the failure helped them: "Even
though Traf-O-Data wasn’t a roaring success, it was seminal in
preparing us to make Microsoft’s first product a couple of years later."
Albert Einstein didn't speak until he was four years old.
Einstein didn't have the best childhood. In fact, many people thought he was just a dud. He never spoke for the first three years of his life,
and throughout elementary school, many of his teachers thought he was
lazy and wouldn't make anything of himself. He always received good
marks, but his head was in the clouds, conjuring up abstract questions
people couldn't understand. But he kept thinking and, well, he
eventually developed the theory of relativity, which many of us still
can't wrap our heads around.
Jim Carrey used to be homeless.
Carrey revealed to James Lipton on "Inside the Actor's Studio" that
when he was 15, he had to drop out of school to support his family. His
father was an unemployed musician and as the family went from "lower
middle class to poor," they eventually had to start living in a van.
Carrey didn't let this stop him from achieving his dream of becoming a
comedian: He went from having his dad drive him to comedy clubs in
Toronto to starring in mega-blockbusters and being known as one of the
best comedic actors of an era.
Bethany Hamilton had her arm bitten off by a shark.
Hamilton started surfing when she was just a child. At age 13, an
almost-deadly shark attack resulted in her losing her left arm. She was
back on her surfboard one month later, and two years after that, she won first place in the Explorer Women’s Division of the NSSA National Championships. Talk about determination.
Benjamin Franklin dropped out of school at age ten.
Franklin's parents could only afford to keep him in school until his tenth birthday.
That didn't stop the great man from pursuing his education. He taught
himself through voracious reading, and eventually went on to invent the
lightning rod and bifocals. Oh, and he became one of America's Founding
Fathers.
Richard Branson has dyslexia.
Branson was a pretty bad student -- he didn't get good marks and he did poorly on standardized tests.
Instead of giving up, he used the power of his personality to drive him
to success. Today, Branson, known for developing Virgin Records and
many of its more technologically advanced spinoffs, is the fourth richest person in the UK.
Stephen King's first novel was rejected 30 times.
If it weren't for King's wife, "Carrie" may not have ever existed. After being consistently rejected by publishing houses,
King gave up and threw his first book in the trash. His wife, Tabitha,
retrieved the manuscript and urged King to finish it. Now, King's books
have sold over 350 million copies and have been made into countless major motion pictures.
Oprah Winfrey gave birth at age 14 and lost her child.
She is one of the most successful and richest people in the world
today, but Winfrey didn't always have it so easy. She grew up in
Milwaukee, Wis. and was repeatedly molested by her cousin, uncle and a family friend. She eventually ran away from home, and at age 14 gave birth to a baby boy who shortly died after.
But Winfrey's tragic past didn't stop her from becoming the force she
is today. She excelled as an honors student in high school, and won an
oratory contest which secured her a full scholarship to college. Now the
entrepreneur and personality has the admiration of millions and a net worth of $2.9 billion.
Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times before creating the lightbulb.
Although the exact number of tries has been debated, ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 attempts, it's safe to say Edison tried and failed a whole lot before he successfully created his beacon of light. His response to his repeated failures? “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”
Kris Carr turned her cancer into a business of hope and healing.
In 2003, Karr was a 32-year-old New Yorker just enjoying life. But
then, a regular checkup at her doctor's office resulted in a diagnosis
of a rare and incurable Stage IV cancer called epithelioid
hemangioendothelioma, existing in her liver and lungs.
Instead of succumbing to the disease, Carr decided to challenge her
diagnosis head on. She attacked her cancer with a brand new nutritional
lifestyle, and turned her experience into a series of successful
self-help books and documentaries. Eventually, she launched her own
wellness website, which is followed by over 40,000 people. Today, Karr is celebrating a decade of "thriving with cancer," and is now revered as one of the most prominent experts on healthy living.
Jay-Z couldn't get signed to any record labels.
No one can stop Jay-Z. He came from a rough Brooklyn neighborhood and
had big dreams to make it big as a rapper. Unfortunately, the rest of
the world didn't agree with him at first. Not one record label would
sign him. Yet that didn't stop him from creating his own music
powerhouse. His label would eventually turn into the insanely lucrative
Roc-A-Fella Records. Here's proof Jay-Z is on top: Forbes has estimated his net worth at $500 million, and TIME ranked him at one of their 2013 Most Influential People In The World. And he's married to Beyoncé.
Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime.
Van Gogh is considered one of the greatest artists of all time, yet
the poor guy only sold one painting the entire time he was alive: "The Red Vineyard at Arles (The Vigne Rouge)," which is now in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. Even though he made no money, he still painted over 900 works of art.
Though his persistence went unnoticed when he was alive, Van Gogh
proves you don't need external validation to be proud of the work you
create.
Franklin Roosevelt became partially paralyzed at 39.
After vacationing in Canada, Roosevelt developed polio, which eventually left him paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life. Even though he couldn't walk, he went on to lead the country as one of the most respected and memorable presidents in history.
Simon Cowell had a failed record company.
By his late twenties, Cowell had made a million dollars and lost a million dollars. Cowell told The Daily Mail in 2012,
"‘I’ve had many failures. The biggest were at times when I believed my
own hype. I’d had smaller failures, signing bands that didn’t work, but
my record company going bust, that was the first big one." Even after
such a momentous loss, Cowell picked himself up and became one of the
biggest forces in reality television, serving as a judge for "Pop Idol,"
"The X Factor," "Britain's Got Talent" and "American Idol." Forbes has
estimated his net worth at $95 million.
Charlize Theron witnessed her mother kill her father.
When Theron was 15, she witnessed her mother shoot her alcoholic father in an act of self-defense.
Instead of letting the trauma immobilize her ambition, Theron
channelled her energy into making a name for herself. She would
eventually become one of the most respected and talented actresses,
becoming the first South African actress to win an Academy Award.
Steven Spielberg was rejected from USC, twice.
You read that right. One of the most prolific filmmakers of all time,
the man who brought us "Shindler's List," "Jaws," "E.T." and "Jurassic
Park" couldn't get into the film school of his choice. Maybe, just sometimes, education can
be a little overrated. In the end, Spielberg would get the last laugh,
when USC awarded him an honorary degree in 1994. Two years later, he
became a trustee of the university.

Nigeria: The Economic Upside By Kemi Adeosun
Nigerians voted for change and to attain that change there is a need to do things differently, in the recognition that doing what we have always done will only result in more of the same. That change has started with the vital offensive against corruption, which has had a huge and adverse effect on our economy. Much of the debilitating under investment in our infrastructure that has handicapped our economic growth, has arisen because funds were diverted to enrich a few at the expense of the wider populace.
At the lower levels, the waste, inefficiency and culture of non-performance have, like a financial cancer, eaten away at our core institutions. We are already beginning to see change. The slide towards self-destruction has slowed down but we must now work collectively to ensure that we exploit the upside from our situation.
Globally the downturn has hit all nations, rich and poor alike. The manner in which governments have intervened to protect their economies have been diverse and innovative. What is abundantly clear is the fact that the previous consensus about what is best for the global economy is rapidly changing. There is a concerted move towards individualism rather than collectivism. The new normal for the global economy is that there is no normal, each nation must painstakingly work out the best path to follow.
For Nigeria,we believe that the best path to follow is to invest in infrastructure that will unlock the potential in the non oil sectors. We can transition from being a commodity economy to an industrialised, regionally dominant one. Oil is important but clearly, oil it not enough. Iran is a very recentand relevant example of living without oil. The sanctions that embargoed Iran’s oil led to the development of robust petrochemical and other export industries that enabled the country to survive. Iran survived without oil, made tough decisions and is now being feted by investors as the next growth story.
The focus of our economic policy is to redress the infrastructure deficit, unlock the rich diversity in the economy with a determined and focussed turnaround programme. For us it would be a tragedy to have endured so much pain and not emerge better and stronger. The provision of a spending stimulus to the economy is critical to releasing the upside in the economy.Investing specifically in Power and Transportation will release the opportunities in solid minerals, manufacturing and agriculture.
However, government spending alone is insufficient to bridge the infrastructure gap and there is a need to embrace private capital to provide additional impact. We are at an advanced stage of reforming the process for Public Private Partnerships to provide a seamless pathway to attracting much needed private, financial and operational input to service delivery. Private capital brings more than financial resources; it also brings discipline and best practice, creating a benchmark against which the utilisation of public money can be measured.
It is important to link the fiscal housekeeping initiatives that we have started with the wider economic strategy. Specifically, questions around the focus on corruption and the elimination of ghost workers, controlling inefficient spending and preventing revenueleakages, need to be evaluated in the context of how it impacts our ability to stimulate the economy. We have been increasing our level of borrowing annually, and much of that is used to fund recurrent spending. Indeed in 2015 just 10% of spending went to capital items. We spent more on travel, training and stationery than on roads. No nation has ever developed with such consistent underinvestment in capital.
Growing the economy at a rate that will address the employment needs of our huge population requires a fundamental change in how government collects its revenues and spends. The 2016 budget is deficit financed; and the fiscal housekeeping which is aggressively blocking revenue leakages and reducing costs is firmly aimed at ensuring that the borrowed funds are channelled into capital projects, rather than seepingthrough an inefficient financial management system. This is not only prudent economics but it is a moral necessity, since these borrowings will be repaid by future generations. Therefore, while we focus fully on the macroeconomic indicators; we must and will continue to focus on the micro factors which collectively shape and determine the larger picture.
The road map to attaining our objectives is a tough one, and we may endure the financial pain for longer than we would prefer, but the upside is that we have actually already endured the worst part of the adjustment cycle. The outlook for oil prices is looking more positive but we are fundamentally determined to ignore oil. One word that will resonate across all that we do in government is ‘Discipline’. Financial discipline is going to be a game changer in shaping the future of Nigeria’s economy.
Our focus will make sure that ‘every naira counts’ irrespective of its source. The government is ready and determined to lead this crusade of financial responsibility. The big questions are:
§ Is the populace ready to do the right thing in their respective areas of operations?
§ Are we willing to be frugal and conservative in expenditure?
§ Are we as custodians of the nation’s wealth willing to manage the resources entrusted to us with care, knowing that someday we will be called to account?
§ Are we willing to confront those who mismanage our collective wealth regardless of the consequences?
§ Dare we look at what worked successfully in the 50s and 60s, and thenmodernise and re-enact them?
§ Dare we look at global trends, and courageously invest in our forecasted choices?
Nigeria stands on the threshold, daring to move into previously uncharted territory through identifying and embracing novel economic and fiscal policy stratagems that will release our considerable upside. We are for innovation to create a new workable path, courage, and discipline to implement and build a resilient economy that is not controlled by the oil price.

Kate Middleton Likely To Wear Indian Designer During Upcoming India Tour

Kate
Middleton and Prince William will visit Bhutan and India in April. The
week-long tour of the two countries has got the fashion world in
thinking about the outfits that the royal might choose to wear. The
34-year-old Kate, who is known to give a nod to the host country she
visits, is likely to wear an Indian designer's cloths during her India visit.
Kate is most likely to wear Saloni during her India visit. The British royal opted to wear a design by the India-born designer for The Fostering Excellence Awards held in November. Her royal blue bright crinkle-effect dress is from new London-based label launched by Saloni Lodha in 2007. The Martine matelassé midi dress featured cropped sleeves, a nipped-in waist and a full skirt.
According to Hello, thrifty Kate can also re-wear the same dress. The designer is also a favorite of Princess Beatrice. The label has its roots in both Britain and India and hence would be apt for the princess. “I think the way we as a brand celebrate bold colours and patterns is our way of bringing the spirit of India into the collections,” said Saloni, speaking about her label recently.
Meanwhile, another Indian designer Kate might look up to for her Indian wardrobe is Ritu Kumar. The label already has a royal connection close to Kate’s heart — when Princess Diana visited Pakistan in 1997, she visited the Shaumat Memoriam Hospital wearing a traditional Indian outfit by the designer.
Apart from the late Princess Diana, Ritu has fans in international icons like Mischa Barton (joined as one of the celebrity contestants on “Dancing With The Stars” Season 22) and Anoushka Shankar. She has also designed the wardrobes for the Miss India contestants for Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Asia since 1994.
In addition, Kate is known for championing high street brands for her designer look. She may choose to wear British brand Reiss and her go-to designers like Alexander McQueen and Jenny Packham. Also, when the royal couple tour Bhutan with its huge temperature drop, Kate is expected to recycle some of her many coats.
