Lagos adopts nine-year-old housemaid tortured with hot water

The Lagos State Government says Precious Chinwedu, a nine-year-old housemaid, who was tortured by her boss for allegedly stealing crayfish is now in its custody.

Our correspondent learnt that the Office of the Public Defender had moved the primary three pupil, who hails from Orlu, Imo State, from Rem-Yems Hospital in the Agbado area of Lagos, where she had been on admission since December 28, 2015.

Our correspondent had reported on January 12, 2016, that Chinwedu’s boss, Ifeoma Mbakwe, had on December 27, 2015, sent her to bring the crayfish in the kitchen but she could not find it. The woman, however, accused her of eating the crayfish without her consent.

In a fit of anger, she reportedly beat up the girl before pouring hot water on her.

It was reported that the woman forced her to sleep in pains on that day before taking her to the hospital the following morning.

Chinwedu had said, “She (Mbakwe) said I should go and bring crayfish, but I told her I did not see it. She said I ate it. She used something we used to grind pepper to hit my head. She bit me in the back and poured hot water on me. I complained that my body was paining me. But she told me to go and sleep like that.

“She does not give me food regularly. There is no food for me in the afternoon when I come back from the school. Sometimes, she would not give me food in the evening. She always beats me. I want to go back to my parents.”

Neighbours of the woman, who had been arraigned in court, said they had warned her against beating Chinwedu on several occasions.

The Director OPD, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, said Governor Akinwumi Ambode and the state Attorney General, instructed the agency to cater to the girl.

She said, “The attention of the governor and the Attorney General was drawn to the plight of Precious Chinwedu, whose boss poured hot water on. We were instructed to take over the matter and the girl has been taken from the hospital with the help of the police. She is now in our protective custody.”

Rotimi said OPD would provide a legal representative for the victim for the prosecution of the case.

“Henceforth, our legal representative will appear in court on behalf of the victim and we will ensure that the case is diligently prosecuted to get justice for her,” she added.

I am not one of those who think former President Goodluck Jonathan is the worst thing that happened to Nigeria after God made Satan like a lot of Nigerians think currently.

Nigerians have an unusual capacity to take in the dramatic. We are drawn in by the eloquence of men and when such fluency is combined with some elements of drama, we mostly lose the tendency for soundness. I try to detach myself from that mob reasoning whose motivation is most often discovered not more than some tempest in a teapot.

The level of unreasonableness and rapidity of presumptions have even now worsened with the capacity of the social media to sell falsehood and untested information. Like the downpour that lumps the chicken and pigeon together, social media has conjoined folly and wisdom in a marriage of perpetual discomfort.

I recently saw a Facebook post, which got me wondering what a lot of us Nigerians make of the reality of life and living. The post sought to know why the Supreme Being ever allowed a man like Jonathan to rule Nigeria. And when I saw it, I felt that the error therein define Nigerians’ perception of the necessary ingredients for the development of their country. Expectedly, that post gained some traction but I disagree with it on two fronts.

For starters, does God decide who becomes President in any country? Do we realise that the choices that we make ultimately determine what happens.

For example, would President Muhammadu Buhari be in office if Christians prayed round the clock and Muslims sat on their mats without casting their votes on March 28, 2015? Wouldn’t Buhari be back in Daura tending his cattle without the interventions of mortals?

Reminds me of a story I read in The Believer’s Authority, one of the classic offerings of the late American Pentecostal preacher, Kenneth Hagin. He told of how Jesus Christ appeared in a vision to teach him about the authority that a believer has. In the course of their discussion, an evil spirit appeared, making a lot of noise and causing a cloud which made it impossible for him to see Jesus. Hagin waited for Jesus to do something but he didn’t. The preacher said he later came to himself, rebuked the spirit, saw it hit the floor like a bag of salt and then the cloud cleared and he could see Jesus again. Thereafter, Jesus explained that if Hagin did nothing about the situation, there was nothing he, Jesus, could do as he already completed his own job years back! This is one fact that Nigerians, especially Christians, must wrap their heads around. There are things that God cannot do for us!

Secondly, I think it is totally unfair to judge Jonathan only on the basis of current alarming revelations of sleaze. Here, I should be clear, corruption is horrible and everyone found culpable by our courts should be made to pay for their misdeeds but we need to put these issues in perspective.

One understands that Nigerians are angry with Jonathan on the assumption that the current vulnerable state of the economy is a direct effect of the volume of monies allegedly stolen under his watch but that is not exactly so. Nigeria’s economy is at its prostrate state because successive leaders failed to put action behind the rhetoric about diversifying the economy.

In spite of all the instances of theft and pilfering that have recently been revealed, Nigeria will not be at this state of affairs if crude oil still sold for say $100 per barrel. The situation with the price of crude oil has left many economies globally in dire straits. Russia, Saudi Arabia. Canada and Venezuela are currently on differing levels of struggles due to this crunch.

Unfortunately, we do not seem to have learnt much from this situation. This administration is in the main; seems to concentrate diversification efforts on commodities and the extractive industries rather than exploring manufacturing, the enormous human resources as well as the creative and tourism potential of the country. Even then, budgetary allocation for Agriculture in the 2016 budget does not reflect the urgency with which Nigeria needs to diversify.

Then, if we did not have a Jonathan who was not desperate to remain in office, could the 2015 elections have gone so smoothly? Some argue that then chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, would not have allowed any manipulation but a president whose eyes were set on a second term would not have appointed a Jega in the first place!

Again, Jonathan did more than this. I do not remember any administration doing as much as Jonathan did to revamp and modernise agriculture. The YouWin Enterprise initiative, even if tokenistic, was an innovative employment generation programme which encouraged entrepreneurship and empowered hundreds of Nigerian youths. YouWIN was the first time I saw people benefiting from a national scheme without recommendations from some highly placed individuals. Modest attempts were made under Jonathan to rebuild a few institutions while the capacity of our security forces to respond to crimes cannot be said to be the same as in 2010. Not too long ago, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, was quoted as acknowledging that Jonathan built more roads than any previous government in Nigeria while the strides made in the reform of power, provided a pedestal for this administration to build on. The Jonathan administration also attempted to save by setting up a Sovereign Wealth Fund.

In spite of whatever strides he made however, some character flaws would deny him the crown for good governance.

One is his deficit in courage. Jonathan came across as a man who could take a stand in power. Someone who listens to every opinion without committing to anything. The inability of Jonathan to curb many of those who worked with him from the mindless plundering of the nation is a case in point. Reference can also be made to the excesses of his wife, Patience and Chief Edwin Clark who has now done a Judas on him.

A corollary to this is the penchant of the former President to speak out of turn. While in government, Jonathan hardly said anything right at the appropriate time. When he spoke, he did with a lot of slips some of which accounts for the whittling down of his popularity. Till date, Nigerians remember sound bites, like “I don’t give a damn about asset declaration”, “stealing is not corruption” and many other faux pas.

Even now, the former president has yet to see the memo. At this time when his closest aides are answering corruption charges, Jonathan should be courageous enough to step out and explain the circumstances around the allegations against his administration. He is not the one on trial at the moment and he should be bold enough to take on this government which is determined to rubbish his administration or savour the dignity of silence until he is called upon to account.

But as this administration and Nigerians continue to probe the past, not paying attention to the weakness of our national institutions will make it all futile.

The inefficiency of our bureaucracy, the hypocrisy of our political elite, the betrayal of public trust by the National Assembly, a unique body meant to check the excesses of other arms of government and protect the people must be addressed without let.

If all the stories of fleece under Jonathan are true, how does the National Assembly exculpate itself from this grand conspiracy against the people? How can Nigeria continue with anti-corruption agencies which wait on executive prompting before getting to work, one which summarily appropriates the roles of courts? How do we reform a Central Bank that flouts its own process on the altar of political convenience ruining thereby the monetary policy of the state and destroying the national economy?

The problem with our leaders, to my mind, is not as much a question of their personal idiosyncrasies as it is the failure of democratic institutions to perform their constitutional roles. Even President Buhari is on this path now unless something gives and everyone holds the ball firmly. For, do not less us deceive ourselves, there are no good men in public office, only institutions can restrain leaders from executive waywardness.

Wizkid’s new baby mama Binta says the pop star has abandoned her since she put to bed.
News broke out on Monday that Wizkid has fathered a child with his US-Based Guinean girlfriend Binta and the Starboy chief is yet to confirm the news.
It is not the first time Wizkid will be abandoning the mother of his child as he did same with Shola, the mother of his first son, Boluwatife.

Wizkid just became a father for a second time! Yesterday, we spoke to Binta Diamond Diallo, who is the mother of Wizkid’s new child who was born last Friday. She named her son, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, Jr. after the rapper in part so that he doesn’t try it with her like he did with the mother of his first child! Don’t know what I’m talking about? Back in August 2011, Nigerian Entertainment Today reported that Wizkid fathered a child with undergraduate student, Oluwanishola Ogudugu. He vehemently denied the claims and later that year in an interview with The Punch, he insisted that he was not a father. He told host, Nonye Ben-Nwankkwo, “It was rumoured that I had a love child. Even if I had a child, I don’t think it is something I should be ashamed of. Instead, I would come out plainly and declare that I am a father. Everybody makes mistakes. But it was just a false rumour. I don’t have a child anywhere.” Months later in 2013, he posted a picture of himself with his son, Boluwatife Balogun, with the caption: “hey, the child’s mine guys, I’m done hiding him [from] you all.” You ain’t gotta lie, Craig!
Anyway, fast forward to the following year, Wizkid began dating Binta which would continue off and on for 2 years. She told us that when she learned that she was pregnant in 2015, the rapper said that he was going to embrace being a dad this time around and that he’d certainly care for the child. However, he kept the child a secret from fans again! Not only has he not seen his son yet, but he hasn’t shown much interest in being a father and Binta wants that to change! Binta says that she just wants him to step up and be a man about his responsibilities.

Father Mbaka: Priest or political soldier?

These, indeed, are interesting times when Nigerians are treated to different forms of absurdities on daily basis. A lot of things that happen, no matter how odd or insane it may be have come to be viewed as normal in Nigeria.
One of such incidence is the transfer of a priest, Rev Father Ejike Mbaka by the leadership of the Catholic Church. An exercise which should have been a normal internal administrative process, soon became a national discourse, with the priest and a section of Nigerians, even a political party accusing the Church of having an ulterior motive.
Father Mbaka loves controversy and the attendant media attention and hype it gives him. He courts controversy in a rather unusual manner for a priest, especially of the Catholic Church, which is usually viewed as being conservative
His utterances before the 2015 general elections, where he publicly declared support for the candidature of the President Muhammadu Buhari gave him out as a highly partisan clergyman.
Aside taking sides, he at several times publicly spoke against former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience to the consternation of people of good conscience who still believe priests and the church should be neutral in matters of politics.
It would also be recalled that after Buhari became President, Father Mbaka was received at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the President praised him to high heavens, describing him as a very courageous man. This praises he received at the Villa must have prompted the controversial cleric to declare, moments later, that some people are planning to kill the President.

Father Mbaka loves controversy and the attendant media attention and hype it gives him. He courts controversy in a rather unusual manner for a priest, especially of the Catholic Church, which is usually viewed as being conservative

And when his posting came, an otherwise normal action in the Catholic Church, Mbaka’s reaction was a clear indication that he has other things on his mind asides priestly work. It also shows his level of loyalty and commitment to the Catholic Church, given that the Adoration Ministry under which he makes most of his pronouncements is his private ministry, and does not belong to the Catholic Church.
The priest, who was posted to Our Lady Parish, Emene from Christ the King Parish, GRA, Enugu, had busted out, in what was seen as a betrayal of his true motives, saying his transfer was meant to make him suffer.
“I know we are going to suffer within now and few months to come. I am going to suffer and suffer; I know that. I’m going to suffer because I have no place to put my head. I am going to suffer because I have no place to keep the Adoration Ministry’s assets. I know I’m going to suffer,” the priest said.
What the priest means by “I am going to suffer and suffer” remains to be understood. Does it mean that the parish he was sent to oversee does not have a mission when he said I have no place to put my head? What does it take to keep the assets of the Adoration Ministry? And in any case, should Mbaka’s private businesses be the headache of the Catholic Church, which has actually been liberal by allowing his personal ministry overshadow his primary duties as a catholic priest?
In yet another display of oddity, the South East zone of the All Progressives Congress, APC, joined Mbaka in attacking the church over the legitimate exercise of its administrative process.

And in any case, should Mbaka’s private businesses be the headache of the Catholic Church, which has actually been liberal by allowing his personal ministry overshadow his primary duties as a catholic priest?

The party, in a statement, accused Bishop Callistus Onaga, Mbaka’s boss of being manipulated by external forces to transfer him.
“As a party, we have watched with concern and trepidation the criticism, the attack, assault and unpleasant comments hurled against Fr. Mbaka since he providentially prophesied that President Buhari would win the 2015 election.
“Even the church did not spare him; he was called unprintable names, yet his prophecy came true”, Osita Okechukwu, the zone’s APC spokesman said.
